The Enlightenment of Eve

Anatomy of Freedom*

The paintings in this section surprise me. They are born out of the need to say something about the way that both biology and society affect the lives of women, and also, by extension, of men.  I thought I was done with all that. I guess not. Having the power to make choices is both a biological and societal inheritance. With luck or perhaps, grace, most of us are born with the self-awareness and intelligence to make choices on our own behalf, and with even greater luck, and surely with grace, we are born into societies where doing that is possible.

“Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” — Mary Oliver, “The Summer Day”
