We are travelers on Life’s road to a destination we cannot know. We start out, make unexpected stops, go in surprising directions, sometimes wander, and stand at crossroads. There are so many life-as-journey metaphors that it is impossible to list them all because the idea, deeply rooted in the human psyche, is found throughout time in sacred and secular literature all over the world. The metaphor is rich with imagery that I reach for in these paintings. Many of them deal with periods of transition because these times, when uncertainty is high, risks must be taken, and choices made, reveal so much to us about ourselves and others and the world in which we live.
